How the tachometer works

The tachometer was also named after the ‘black box’ of trucks. It is located inside the vehicle, is always within the reach of the driver and is linked to the gearbox and the speed of movement of the vehicle is recorded using sensors. The tachometer system records both truck activity and driver activity. The hours of driving, the hours of parking, but also the best time of the driver are recorded. The tachograph can be accessed by four types of cards: the driver, the company, the service card, and the control card. Of all these, the driver card is the most important. On the driver card, the tachometer records its speed, kilometers, and activity. At a period of 28 days, the driver card must be downloaded, this action is mandatory and provided by law. The memory of the tachograph device should be downloaded every three months. The European Union requires that every truck that is registered, manufactured after January 1, 2007, must have a digital tachograph. It is said that some more ‘inventive’ drivers have found various ways by which they tried to trick this system, but remember that the latest tachographs record even attempts to defraud. When the driver tries to set the magnet to stop recording, the tachometer system picks up the data it needs from the GPS, continues to work and records on the driver card that the driver tried to manipulate the tachograph. The driver’s work schedule is 9 hours a day, divided into 4 and a half hours by 4 and a half hours. It must have a break of at least 45 minutes and a mandatory 9 hours of parking and total rest until the card is closed, or the day at 24 hours. The tachometer is the system that measures the speed of the parts in the rotational movement of the truck and is made up of a small generator and a small electric volume, the scale of which is graded in units of angular speed, or implicitly of speed. The tachometer is also the main source in determining the cause of a possible accident. It looks like a CD player and besides the fact that it records the speed and kilometers traveled, it also shows that the driver respected the required rest time. The driver’s job is quite demanding and all drivers must follow strict rules and have impeccable road behavior.

But in addition to these responsibilities, in most cases, the satisfaction is tailored. Each truck driver is required to hold the tachograph card. The LKW STORE Service team encourages this job and is with each driver, offering them support and the best service for trucks. Your safety as well as the other participants in traffic, but also pedestrians, is paramount, which is why we advise all truck drivers to respect the rules regarding rest and rest times and to always drive cautiously, regardless of the roads they are traveling on.
